Bananas for Psychiatry!

This was the first day of our psychiatry rotation, and we kicked it off with a full day of lectures. Many of us meddies are a nervous about what this rotation has in store- up until now we’ve had close to zero experience dealing with acutely psychotic or delirious patients, and we were all relieved to be eased in with three days of lectures. Already on day one, I’ve learned something that will stay with me for the rest of my life! Bananas are magical.

That’s right. Although not strictly related to psychiatry, this fact has greatly improved my own mental health today. During lunch break, a lovely colleague let me in on what I thought must have been a well kept secret! These hardy, versatile fruits are not only amazing in smoothies, breads, and sandwiches, but they also possess an ethereal ability to transform into ice cream!! And here is the clincher- no ice or cream required!

The recipe is simple:

1) Peel and slice bananas

2) Freeze for 1-2 hours

3) Place banana slices in blender and watch this fruit transform magically into sweet, creamy, indulgent ice cream!!

Ta-da!!!
